Parts Spotlight: Why is there a latch sticking out of this frame?

When we see a latch, it is usually protruding from a door lock, latching into a frame. On rare occasions, you will find a latch that is mounted on the frame that doesn't seem to latch into anything (pictured below) What is this phenomenon?



Part Name: Emergency Door Stop

Application: Double Acting Center Hung Doors

Found Commonly In: Hospitals, Schools, etc.

Most Common Replacement: Mckinney DS-6.




What does it do?

This product converts a double acting center hung door (swings in and out), into a single acting door (only swings one way). In the case of an emergency, the latch can be depressed and locked into the frame, allowing the door to swing the opposite way. Example of a real life application below:
