Implementing the 5S Methodology In Your Workspace
The 5S Methodology is a workplace organization method that helps maximize efficiency and effectiveness in a defined area.
SORT: go through all the items in the location and remove those that are unnecessary
examples include:
the parts table
your browser tabs
shelves that have accumulated too many items
your Downloads folder and desktop
your company vehicle
SET IN ORDER: put all necessary items in the optimal place for fulfilling their function
if something has an identifying mark, other things can't accumulate there
check with Sam if you need to borrow a label maker
SHINE: cleaning and inspecting the area and its components on a regular basis
remember our Core Value: "unexpected cleanliness"
STANDARDIZE: establish procedures and schedules that make the new system into the routine
creating habits is already a major focus for 2021
SUSTAIN: stick to the established procedure going forward and repeat the cycle occasionally
the first four steps don't make an area perfect, they make it improved - the process can and should be repeated
remember our Core Value: "always improving"
What's one thing in your workday that you can use the 5S methodology on THIS WEEK?
Each person has chosen an area where they are going to implement these steps before we meet again next Wednesday. Remember to share before and after pictures on the team "Photo & Video Stream" Google Chat before Wednesday morning!
And... shoutout to Nan, whose dedicated work reviewing and reorganizing processes in Anderson inspired this 5S Methodology goal!
